As much as we hate to accept it, aging is an unavoidable part of life. While you might not beable to avoid Father Time entirely, there are plenty of ways you can postpone his inevitable arrival, some of which you might have never even considered. Here are five ways you can defy aging:

Make H2O your best friend.

Water is essential for human life and it also essential in preventing aging. Your skin is the largest organ of the human body and when dehydrated it will show it in the form of dry patches and wrinkles. Drinking water replenishes skin cells and tissues while also flushing the toxins out of your body. This allows for smoother, younger and healthier looking skin. Medical experts recommend drinking 6-8 glasses of water every day to ensure overall health and keep your skin looking clear and healthy. So ditch the soft drinks and coffee for a glass of filtered H2O–your skin will thank you in the long run.

Extinguish those scented candles.

Gerontogens are environmental factors that speed up the aging process. Common gerontogens include: stress, cigarette smoke and scented candles. That’s right folks, your beloved Christmas-scented candles can actually cause accelerated aging. The paraffin wax and synthetic fragrances in candles are both borrowed from petroleum, and burning both paraffin and soy candles can release toxic chemicals into the air around you. The toxin-filled air can linger after the candle has burned out, trapping the chemicals in your house. Instead of using a candle to capture the smell of pine trees or the ocean, get some fresh air and actually visit nature.

Protect yourself from the sun.

While being tan might be aesthetically pleasing, sitting in the direct sunlight is detrimental to the health of your skin. Sun exposure has been listed as the number one cause of aging skin. UV rays destroy skin’s elasticity, causing it to prematurely sag and wrinkle. Sun exposure is also one of the leading causes of skin cancer and damaged vision. Avoid over-exposure to the sun by wearing sunscreen of 30 SPF or above. You can even protect yourself while making a fashion statement by wearing wide-brimmed hats and sunglasses.

Eat clean.

By swapping processed foods for natural foods, you can avoid unhealthy phosphates. There are several different phosphates often added to processed food, all of which can weaken bones and interfere with Vitamin D. Eating a plant-rich diet will slow the aging process significantly. Be sure to include lots of dark leafy greens, citrus fruits and cauliflower, as these are chocked-full of essential vitamins and nutrients. It might not be as fun to eat an apple instead of drinking a bottle of apple juice, but remember: Apple juice has nearly twice the calories and sugar of an apple while only including one tenth of the fiber.

The beauty industry wants you to pile on the foundation and concealer in order to defy aging. However, that “wrinkle-erasing” foundation might actually be accelerating the aging process. The parabens often found in cosmetics can cause disruption to the estrogenic hormones which in turn, prematurely ages female fertility. High paraben levels have been found to increase the aging of women’s eggs. Don’t let the airbrushed advertisements fool you into slathering your face in makeup and allow your skin to breathe.
