Eliminating Submental Fat with CoolSculpting for Double Chin

coolsculpting for double chin

A study conducted by the American Society for Dermatologic Surgery (ASDS) in 2021 showed that 70% of people are bothered by submental fat. This is the accumulated fat under the chin, also known as a double chin. Many factors can lead to a double chin including genetics, aging, and weight gain. Patients can get rid of a double chin through surgery, invasive, and minimally invasive procedures. These procedures include liposuction, Kybella (deoxycholic acid), and CoolSculpting at Aesthetica.

Is it hard to lose a double chin?

It can be challenging to get rid of submental fat because of the unique property of fat cells. The number of fat cells in our body are set at adolescence. As we gain weight, our fat cells expand in size and as we lose weight, they shrink in size; we don’t actually lose them.

Due to the nature of fat cells, it can be almost impossible to get rid of stubborn fat pockets with just a healthy diet and exercise. Luckily, modern cosmetic treatments offer ways to destroy fat cells for good and give you the results you may not be able to achieve on your own.

How does Kybella (deoxycholic acid) double chin removal work?

Kybella (deoxycholic acid) is a fat-dissolving series of injections for the treatment of stubborn fat cells under the chin. Deoxycholic acid is a natural substance in our bodies. This acid permanently destroys fat cells. Once your Kybella (deoxycholic acid) series is complete, those fat cells are destroyed and will not return. This will give you a slimmer, more defined chin and jawline area for months and years to come.

How does CoolSculpting for double chin work?

You’ve likely heard of CoolSculpting for the body, but we can also use it for removing submental fat. The CoolSculpting device comes with different applicator shapes and sizes to target specific areas of fat in your body. The CoolMini is the applicator we use at Aesthetica to treat the double chin. The CoolMini is ideal for patients who want to avoid the surgical and injectable route.

An Aesthetica CoolSculpting Specialists starts the treatment by placing a gel sheet under the chin to protect the skin. Then we place the CoolMini applicator and it will begin to suction and hold the fat in place. After 45 minutes, the fat reaches a freezing point. Once removed, the CoolSculpting Specialist removes the applicator and massages the treated area.

Patients can go about their normal activities with little to no downtime. In the following weeks the body will gradually and naturally remove the dead fat cells through the lymphatic system.

Which submental fat reduction treatment is right for me?

Both Kybella (deoxycholic acid) and CoolSculpting can provide effective and long-lasting results. But, some patients may prefer one treatment over the other. Patients should also consider other things when considering one of the two treatments. Things to consider include possible side effects and treatment discomfort.

Kybella (deoxycholic acid) is a minimally-invasive procedure and has little downtime. Some of the side effects include swelling, bruising, pain, redness, and numbness in the treated area. These side effects can last up to 4 weeks. Patients may also experience more discomfort during treatment. We can subside discomfort with numbing cream.

CoolSculpting is a non-invasive procedure with little to no downtime. The healing process differs from Kybella (deoxycholic acid). CoolSculpting side effects can include slight numbness and redness. These side effects can also last up to 4 weeks. During treatment, patients may experience some discomfort. The discomfort dissipates when the treatment area becomes cold enough.
